Tallinn - Helsinki
Hi everyone ! Here I am withe the pictures of my weekend spent in Talinn and Helsinki with my cousin. The weather was pretty much changing all the time with snow, rain (and wind) all time long !
To begin with here is a map of the baltic countries so you can better locate the different cities visited.
We took the plane in Riga on saturday morning for an arrival in Tallinn around 10am, under the snow.
We started our walk on the freedom square ("Vabaduse Väljak"), a big place next to the entrance of the old town. A massive glass cross symbolizes the independance war (1918-1920)
The hill next to the place is the burial ground of Kalev, the first hero of Estonia. At the top we found a statue of Linda, his widow. The area became during the soviet time a secret place of commemoration for the victims of executions and deportations ordered by Stalin.
We then arrive to the "Riigikogu", the parliament, today hosted in a pink castle wanted by the Russian empress : Catherine the Great.
In front of that palace we found the orthodox cathedral Alexandr-Nevski. Ended in 1900 it is part of a "russification" of the Baltic regions. Pictures are forbidden inside but it is a richly ornated one as many orthodox churches are.
Not far from there we found the other cathedral of Tompeea (the hill that overlook the city) : the Dom church. It is a lutherian confession one so it is highly different from the previous one.
Higher in the city we have two viewpoints that give a glimpse of the city.
We can still see a good part of the old city walls linking 9 of the 26 remaining towers (once there were 45).
The maritime entrance is one of the most impressive remain of the medieval era of Tallinn.
The next streets are hosting most of Tallinn's guildes (merchant associations) in beautiful houses.
The city hall is the only one remaining in Northern Europe in gothic style. Since 1530 the old Thomas weathercock ornate its roof.
The St Peter and St Paul church is well disimulated few blocks from there.
We then quit the old town to join more modern and merchant neighbourhoods to reach our hotel.
After a short break at the hotel we went to check on the ferry terminal for the next morning.
For the end of the afternoon we went visiting the church St Nicolas which hosts an impressive collection of religious art and is really worth visiting !
After a good diner in an italian restaurant we went to sleep because we were departing the next morning quite early.
As the ferry deck was frozen we did not stay there for long !
When we arrived in Helsinki we started by visitng the orthodox cathedral Uspenski.
Another cathedral overlook the city : the neoclassic lutherian cathedral Tuomiokirkko.
This church is located on a place among the biggest one of the city that I propose you to discover down here in video:

Then we went to eat in the train station area.
The afternoon we again visited a church though this one is really peculiar. It is a catholic one but it is by its very original architecture that it is so well-known.
The ceiling is made of 22km of copper blades.

We went back to Tallinn by he last ferry of the evening and went straight to sleep to be ready for our last day of the trip.
We first visited the Estonian history museum, small but highly interesting and very interactive.
We then went to visit the city old walls (3 towers and the way between them are acessible)
We ended by having lunch in a traditional restaurant where I could try a very unusual thing... BEAR meat !! It was really tasty and I recommand you to try it if you have the chance to !

I end here with the little unusual fact of the weekend : we noticed tha a lot of people crossing from Tallinn to Helsinki had with them a lot of alcohol bottles and beer packs. It is because alcohol is far cheaper in Estonia than in Finland !
